Dark Starry Skies

Our new ARTlifeLAND newsletter is out with the latest on all our current land (and space!) arts projects.

As the world watches a tiny probe land on a comet around 500 million kilometres away, we are very excited to be hosting a talk by Rosetta Space Mission research scientist Andrew Morse alongside Frances Harrison's Dark Starry Skies exhibition this December.

The talk will take place on Saturday 6 December at Lynmouth Pavilion, alongside the first screening of Frances Harrison's Dark Starry Skies film.

Due to the size of the venue, places are limited, but please get in contact via the ARTlife website if you would like to come along.

The Dark Starry Skies exhibition is open throughout December at Lynmouth Pavilion.

Also coming up: final Poetry Pin focus walk of 2014 with Chris Jelley along the Hinkley C boundary on Saturday 13th December. See newsletter for further details.

We have grants available for community-led arts projects in West Somerset and the next deadlines for applications are in 2015:
9th January (for a decision after 28th January)
2nd March (for a decision after 25th March)

All the details and a downloadable grant pack are at http://www.artlife-somerset.co.uk/pages/resources_grants.htm

Our new ARTlifeLAND newsletter is out with things to see, do and think about this Autumn.

Right now: Take an outing to Lynmouth Pavilion in September to enjoy the wonderful books of stories and sketches harvested from the Coleridge Way in Chris Jelley’s community Story Box project. (Good place for a cream tea with a view too).

October: Summer Holidays are over but there are still opportunities to get out with the family in these golden summer / autumn days. Explore new places, create your own constellations, and find your inner poet, as part of Somerset Art Week's Family Friendly Weekend (4 and 5 October)

Rest of the year: There are now only five (one of which is tomorrow!) more Poetry Pin Focus Walks around Shurton Bars and Hinkley C – don’t miss your chance to explore and contribute to this properly ground-breaking project.

And beyond... Early plans for new artist opportunities in Watchet…

Got an idea for an arts project or event? If you're based in West Somerset, your group could be eligible for a grant of up to £1,000 from ARTlife. The next deadlines for applications are 15th September and 3rd November.
We've just awarded a grant of £500 to Watchet Roots for a series of children's summer workshops to fill the gap sadly left by the demise of Watchet Kids Festival. We've also funded Minehead EYE £650 to bring in a professional designer to help members create their own merchandise to sell at the youth park. And back in Watchet, we've awarded Contains Art £700 to run community workshops alongside their upcoming portraiture show during Somerset Art Weeks.
All the details and a downloadable grant pack are at http://www.artlife-somerset.co.uk/pages/resources_grants.htm

Our first ARTlifeLAND newsletter is launched!

This month's issue gives a quick introduction to four quietly revolutionary art projects exploring the past, present and future of this beautiful corner of England.

Try out new works harnessing the power of the smart phone to bring Coleridge's 'flycatcher' notes back to the hidden places that inspired him, or write your own poetic response to the impact and change soon to affect the landscape with the building of Hinkley C.

All the projects offer wonderful opportunities for all ages to get out in this beautiful weather to explore the hills, holloways and coast of West Somerset.

What are you waiting for?

ARTlife news June/July

The next deadline to apply for a grant from ARTlife is 7th July. We can match-fund arts projects and events in West Somerset up to a maximum of £500. The forms are downloadable from http://www.artlife-somerset.co.uk/pages/resources_grants.htm
Last year we helped Mind in West Somerset to run an art group for people who wanted to explore their creativity and develop a positive attitude to mental health. They focused on clay work as a tactile and inclusive artform.

Welcome to ARTlifeLAND! - where dynamic digital arts projects are waiting to be discovered in the glorious landscape of West Somerset.

We're working on a whole new range of projects this summer and all the details will be posted here.
Join the Poetry Pin trail around Hinkley Point; follow in the footsteps of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and read his handwritten 'Flycatchers' in the places that inspired him; take part in Dark Starry Skies storytelling workshops; discover QR Code poems as you walk the Coleridge Way; or add a line or two to the Story Boxes dotted around the countryside.

Anyone organising an arts project in West Somerset in 2014 may be eligible to apply for financial support up to the value of £500 from ARTlife, the West Somerset Arts Consortium.

Ray Tew, ARTlife chair, explains: 'ARTlife have been supporting local arts groups for many years and we still may be able to support new projects, or groups who have not yet heard about our grants scheme. Whether it's a one-off event or an arts group with a regular programme, a well-established local group or someone hoping to set up a new organisation, ARTlife may be able to help.'

ARTlife already supports music, drama and dance groups, painting and sculpture projects right across West Somerset. Applications come from voluntary groups, youth groups, activities for people with disabilities, after-school clubs and half-term clubs. For events with paid entry, ARTlife is often able to offer a Guarantee Against Loss, which gives organisers the confidence to go ahead, while for other activities an outright grant may be available. Full Profit commercial activities and grants to individuals are not eligible.

Further details, Terms and Conditions can be found on the ARTlife website, www.artlife-somerset.co.uk, where application forms can be downloaded, or for further advice email Tracey Roberts, ARTlife Coordinator, on info@artlife-somerset.co.uk

Deadlines for applications are: 3rd March and 23rd April
